Jeanne Hamburg Speaks on Intersection of Copyright Law and Social Media
New York, NY (January 23, 2013) – Jeanne M. Hamburg, a Member of Norris McLaughlin, P.A., served on the panel for “Look Before You Tweet (or Post, or Pin): Copyright Enforcement (or not) in Social Media,” hosted by the New York Chapter of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A. on January 22 at the Princeton Club.
The panel examined copyright issues cropping up around social media sites like Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. These included the implications for owners, posters and sites for inclusion of copyrighted works on social media sites; whether it makes business sense for a copyright owner to take action; how a copyright owner or user can create policies and navigate various terms of service on an ever-growing number of social media sites; and how social media sites take licenses for and otherwise approach copyrighted content posted on their sites. Hamburg addressed specifically the terms of service of the major social media sites and how users and owners of copyrighted content can navigate those terms.
The Copyright Society of the U.S.A. is a center of the U.S. copyright community for business people, lawyers in private practice and in-house, law professors and law students who share a common interest in copyright and related intellectual property rights. A 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation founded in 1953, the Society works to advance the study and understanding of copyright law and related rights, the scope of rights in literature, music, art, theater, motion picture, television, computer software, architecture, and other works of authorship, and their distribution via both traditional and new media. The Society provides opportunities for interaction with all facets of the copyright law community, holding national events such as The Brace Lecture, Annual Meeting, and Mid-Winter Meeting. In addition, its eleven regional Chapters conduct events in their respective areas. The Society also publishes the Journal of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A., promotes Copyright Awareness in schools, and presents the annual Seton Award and Award for Excellence in Creativity.
