Gerard Proefriedt, a Member with Norris McLaughlin, P.A., will participate on an interactive panel for the New York Co-op & Condo Expo sponsored by The Cooperator on November 2, 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on West 34th Street in New York.
Proefriedt will take part in “Homesharing – How to Handle the Impact of Airbnb in Your Building” from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM in Room 2. According to The Cooperator, “Homesharing is a trend that’s not likely to disappear any time soon – and it poses unique challenges to boards. This seminar will explore the legality of homesharing, security/ privacy concerns, house rules for co-ops/ condos, and impact on property values, as well as ways for boards and residents to compromise on homesharing policy in their buildings and associations.” The panel will discuss the primary legal concerns for condo boards to consider regarding homesharing in their building or HOA, and what unit owners should take into consideration before opening their home to Airbnb guests or similar short-term renters.
The expo provides educational seminars about the latest building services, free advice from industry experts, and an opportunity to network with peers from more than 250 exhibitors. For more information or to register, visit https://coopexpofall.com/.
Proefriedt devotes his practice to real estate law and commercial litigation, with specific expertise in Loft Law. The objective of the Loft Law is to bring buildings illegally converted to residential use into compliance with state and city housing laws relating to health, safety, and fire protection. The requirements of these laws are met when the owner performs construction work to bring its building up to the city’s residential code and obtains a revised certificate of occupancy that allows residential use of the building.
Proefriedt is also experienced in landlord and tenant law, real estate leasing, air rights transfers, cooperative and condominium conversions, commercial litigation, real estate transfers, and refinancing. He earned his J.D. from Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, in 1987, and his B.A. from State University of New York at Buffalo in 1984.
