Richard Brent Somach Guest Lectures for Real Estate Class at Lehigh University

Allentown, PA (November 12, 2010) – Richard Brent Somach, Member of Tallman Hudders & Sorrentino, the Pennsylvania office of Norris McLaughlin, P.A., served as a guest lecturer for two sections of students at Lehigh University’s Integrated Real Estate at Lehigh (IRE@L) program on November 10, 2010 on the topic of sheriff’s sales and real estate tax sales. The course entitled, “Introductory Seminar in Real Estate,” is co-taught by Jane Schiff, a real estate broker with The Frederick Group, and Andrew Twiggar, Principal, Owner and Co-founder of the Dunn Twiggar Company, LLC, a real estate development and management company. This course explores a variety of issues related to real estate, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Somach specifically covered sheriff’s sales and tax sales in Pennsylvania. Other course topics include the relationship of real estate to finance, architecture, environmental issues, government, engineering, urban planning, and economic development.

“There are a myriad of local rules and practices associated with sheriff’s sales and real estate tax sales. I explained to the class what happens at each of these sales and how to avoid common errors if you are involved in a sale. I answered questions and clarified popular misconceptions about buying properties at these sales,” said Somach.

Somach focuses his practice on real estate, commercial law, and creditors’ remedies, representing real estate development companies, shopping centers, and local banks. In the banking area, Somach assists clients with their transactional, litigation, and operational needs, and has extensive experience handling collections, foreclosures and complex commercial workouts. Somach has represented real estate owners, developers and investors in a broad range of real estate transactions, including zoning matters, residential subdivisions and shopping center development.

As a licensed title insurance agent, Somach manages ABE Settlement Services, a title insurance and settlement company to creatively serve client needs. He currently serves as legal counsel to the Lehigh Valley Association of REALTORS®.

Somach serves as Assistant Lehigh County Solicitor, advising the Sheriff’s Office, the Tax Assessment Office and the Tax Claim Bureau and frequently writes and lectures on real estate matters, sheriff’s sales and real estate tax sales. He moderated “Sheriff’s Sales in Pennsylvania” previously and authored “Sheriff’s Sales and Real Estate Tax Sales” for A Day on Real Estate, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI). Previously, he has presented lectures on mortgage foreclosures, “Issues in Commercial Mortgage Foreclosure” and “Issues in Residential Mortgage Foreclosure” for PBI and has lectured at the annual Real Estate Institute Program.

Active in many community organizations, Somach was a past president of the Salisbury Township School Board. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Lehigh County Bar Association, where he served as President in 1992.

Somach earned his J.D. in 1974 from Hofstra University and his B.A., with honors, from Lehigh University in 1971.
